Monitoring for Commercial Systems

Most commercial grade monitoring is built into the inverter.  Commercial Solar Systems are modular in design, with banks of inverters, – eg a 200kw system has 8 x 25kw inverters.  Thus monitoring is usually provided within the inverters. all that is required are an extra couple of components to get all the inverters to communicate to one central data point and then the programming of these.

An example of Monitoring Large Commercial Systems

For example – 178 kw Rooftop Council Administration Building.

7 x 25kwh SMA Inverters.  All that added was a “Cluster Controller” – which controls putting the 7 inverters into 1 cluster to transmit data.

As this was over 100kw a separate meter was installed, the purpose of this meter is to capture only the data of what the system is generating.

Both these items were installed electrically by HCB Solar and connected to a data point.  The council then had to do ensure this data point was integrated into their IT network to ensure various Council Personnel were able to login and access the data.

The cost of this was the Cluster Controller and separate meter and installation time.  This is a one off cost.  There are no annual data subscription fees to access the data.

Get the most from your solar

Monitoring can provide you data on:

  • what your solar system is generating
  • what your business is consuming
  • $ being saved
  • Greenhouse Gases being reduced
  • and a few other options depending on choice of monitoring package.

Once your solar system is installed you can measure its performance in real time, access a wide range of information via wireless connection (GPRS), your PC and web browser; plus have alerts sent via SMS or email. Installation and initial operation of a data logger is quick and simple.

The level of monitoring you require will determine which products we use in your system’s design.

Generally monitoring is available with modern day inverters however some consumers want more information than just their system production.

External monitoring systems can allow you to measure, in real time, other elements of Commercial usage.

There are a range of products available, however we find the most streamlined are the SMA inverters and the Fronius range of smart meters to go with their inverters.
